Lynchburg, VA (March 20, 2017) –The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg is experiencing substantial supply shortages in breakfast items. Last year, the Community Feeding Program provided more than 39,000 meals to individuals in need. This is a 40 percent increase in individuals served over the previous year. Since the beginning of 2017, the amount of individuals needing assistance has continued to grow. "We are seeing more senior citizens and veterans," stated Food Services Director Carol Kirby. "Many of our elderly citizens run out of social security benefits by month end and rely on this program to eat."

Breakfast supplies with longer shelf life such as cereal, instant oatmeal, sugar, coffee and creamer are at critically low levels falling 70 to 80 percent behind where supplies should be at this point in the year. There is also a need for hot breakfast items such as eggs, bacon, and sausage, as well as milk and juice. With spring and summer breaks for local school children right around the corner, there is an increased sense of urgency to replace these items quickly due to an anticipated increase in the number of individuals needing help.

The Community Feeding Program is one of many services provided by The Salvation Army's Center of Hope. Donations of food items from the community help lower overall expenses, which allow the feeding program to provide two meals a day, seven days a week for 365 days a year. The Center of Hope serves residents of Lynchburg, Bedford, Appomattox, Amherst, Nelson and Campbell counties. Donations can be dropped off at the Center of Hope at 2211 Park Avenue in Lynchburg daily.
