Volunteers Recognized at Lynchburg Salvation Army Appreciation Dinner

Lynchburg, VA (October, 23) – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg recognized several volunteers on Sat., Oct. 12 at The Salvation Army Community Corp Center located on Park Ave. in Lynchburg, VA. The annual event is held to recognize the exceptional volunteer work put forth by members of the community. Volunteers were recognized for their work in several areas of the organization that included: Center of Hope, Red Kettle, Angel Tree, Community Feeding Program, community awareness and disaster response. Recipients of volunteer awards are chosen based on several deciding factors, which include but are not limited to hours worked and extent of impact. Last year, more than 1,100 people volunteered close to 3,600 hours at The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg Corps.
The following individuals and groups were recognized:
Christmas Volunteer Award – Sweet Frog of Lynchburg
Spirit of the Army Award– Hope Company Church
Hands of Hope Award – LiveIt Ministries
Partners in Mission Award – Liberty University School of Nursing
Alice C Smith was recognized with the Lifetime Board Member designation. Smith has served on The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg's advisory board for more than 30 years. During that time, she has participated on several committees and has served as Board Chair twice.
The speaker for the night was Jeff Jellets, CEM, Disaster Coordinator for the Southern Territory of The Salvation Army. Jellets, who has been in emergency management leadership since 1992, has coordinated The Salvation Army's disaster response to numerous hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes, and supported The Salvation Army's efforts at the Pentagon in 2001 and was deployed to New York City in the wake of the 911 terrorist attacks. Jellets discussed the importance and necessity of volunteers to the work of The Salvation Army and how impactful it is in disaster response efforts.
